The Influence of the Perceived Mother¡¯s Rearing Behaviors on Self-image among Middle School Students: The Mediating Effect of Loneliness

Abstract
This study investigated the relationship among perceived mother`s rearing behaviors, loneliness and the self-image of middle school students. In particular, the aim of this study was to examine the role of loneliness in relation to their mother`s rearing behavior and self-image. The subjects of this research comprised 548 middle school students. Data were analyzed by means of Pearson`s correlation and structural equation modeling. The results were as follows: First, positive parenting behaviors were negatively associated with the loneliness of middle school students and negative parenting behaviors were positively associated with loneliness. Positive parenting behaviors were positively associated with the self-image of middle school students. Negative parenting behaviors and the loneliness were negatively associated with the self-image of middle school students. Second, the pathways of parenting behaviors, loneliness and self-image were supported. The direct impact of a mother`s rearing behaviors on self-image was mediated by loneliness. In conclusion, the mother`s rearing behaviors may affect loneliness and psycho-social development in terms of self-image in middle school students while their ego-identity is being formed.
